[Libav-user] Which video codecs support alpha?

I'm trying to make a video that has transparency so that I can overlay it on
another, but the original mp4v codec I was using doesn't support alpha
channels.
What format and container would be best to create a video with alpha?
Would this format cause any problems when overlaying it?
Is h264 the only one? Because I can't use that codec.
