I have never heard of or used CURL.  I use libav/avlib/FFMPEG to retrieve and display a live RTP/RTSP h.264 stream and it works fine -- when the server is behaving.  Sometimes the server sends strange data that messes up libav/avlib/FFMPEG.  Often the same strange data does not mess up VLC.
