Which brings the follow-up question- why did crop...?

IIRC, some/many/most/all filters operate on a limited number of pix formats 
and ffmpeg automatically inserts conversion steps as needed. If this is 
true, it would be helpful for the user docs to show the native in/out pix 
formats of each filter.
