volume normalization is easy to understand:

* the volume is adjusted so the loudest part
   has 89 dB

* the value because you can't gain in the
   digital domain with risk deadly clipping

if your recording is shitty and has extreme short and loud parts the 
whole track sounds too low - fix the recording
