To add to that, you must take into consideration that the development
of ffmpeg, with its libraries and tools, is for the most part a
voluntary engagement. There is apparantly not enough *visible* demand
for a good replacement (or for keeping ffserver), and not enough
supply of developers willing to take up the job.
That might also explain why the commercial products survive, as you,
Juan, noted:

Some people's, or probably some companies', demand is so high that they
are willing to pay money, and they seem to get what they need from
Wowza et.al. That said, there are also companies sponsoring or
contributing to ffmpeg development to fulfill their needs.
Good open source projects thrive from people willing to step up and
fill a gap. The ones to fill the ffserver gap haven't stepped up. It
seems they need to understand that ffserver is ending in order to be
willing to contribute (or find someone to contribute).
