So apparently, ffmpeg isn't static after all.

Well, either something is going wrong during the configure or linking
process, or you are not using that ffmpeg binary.
What does
$ which ffmpeg
$ file ffmpeg
$ ldd ffmpeg
and finally
$ ffmpeg
say?
