[FFmpeg-user] commonplace newbie question

I have a sequence of still that I make into a movie using ffmpeg. I'd
like to use the GPU to speed the conversion but don't know if I can or
how to do so. The images are 5 megapixel jpegs and the output is 30fps
mp4. A thousand frames takes about an hour using my old Opteron 2210.
In the same box is an ATI 4770 that I think could do the job faster if
I knew how. I have looked at the ffmpeg wiki to check out hardware
acceleration but I don't understand from what I'm reading either if
ffmpeg supports this on my hardware, or if so how to issue the right
commands. So I'd like a pointer to instructions if they exist.

Also I'm considering buying a new video card. If there's one that's
known to work with ffmpeg as I've described then a referral would be
useful as well.

Thanks,

Dave
