This is not necessarily related to the original 
question but please note that libavutil contains 
implementations for several common security 
algorithms, including sha, blowfish and cast5.

The implementations are meant to be fast and 
slim, but no measurements against side channel 
attacks have been taken, ie the implementations 
should be fine for multimedia applications but 
not necessarily for general security-relevant 
tasks.
