[FFmpeg-user] ffvhuff mkv playback issues and odd coloured artefacts

Hi there,
I wrote a simple ffmpeg based script to make screencasts
https://github.com/kaihendry/recordmydesktop2.0/blob/master/x11capture
It's worked well from my Thinkpad X220, but after switching to a new
Thinkpad X1 Carbon 3 with a larger 1920x1080 screen, I'm having two
issues that I've attempted to demonstrate in this screencast:
http://r2d2.webconverger.org/2015-03-04/ffmpeg-problems.mp4
So using ffmpeg 1:2.5.4-1 and mplayer 37353-1 from Archlinux, I'm now
unable to playback the intermediate mkv files without stuttering.
Mplayer's non-interleaved mode does not help. When I convert the mkv
to mp4, playback works fine, but I need to often check the mkv file
for problems before doing an expensive encode. So any tips for a
better intermediate format? Ideally one that doesn't take up so much
disk space! :)
Next problem that I'm noticing, are these odd artifacts in my
recording: http://s.natalian.org/2015-03-04/artifacts.png
I'm not sure what this phenomenon is called. Or how to avoid it. Does
anyone know?
Many thanks!
