Apart from what Lou said, I would still recommend 
the following to copy a dvd (this cannot be done 
with FFmpeg):
mplayer dvd:// -dumpstream
mplayer dvdnav:// -dumpstream

You can still de-interlace / de-telecine and 
reencode the resulting mpeg stream.
