[FFmpeg-user] ffplay: artifacts on playing images

I am trying to determine the support for yuv444p support in various
video websites, but I've stumbled into a bit of a problem just
preparing a sample file. I created an image with text in different
colours (rgb24), but when I try to play the image in ffplay, I already
get output that seems as if it was converted into yuv420p or such,
because the colours are definitely off and the text outlines are
wrong. Can someone explain why that happens?

I attached the image. Opening it in an image viewer and then through
ffplay and putting the two together clearly demonstrates the issue.
