[FFmpeg-user] Building latest ffmpeg with latest x264

1) ffmpeg does not require x264, but if i want to decode encode yuv420p
format, do i need it ?
2) The reason behind this question is that building x264 requires yasm, but
if i use --disable-asm, it does not look for yasm.
    But my understanding is if we disable asm, don't we get performance
degrade as we disable asm optimization?

Kindly correct me if i am wrong?.
