While your explanation is very helpful (obviously much 
better than what I would have written) please note 
that fourcc.org is strongly avi-related (and may be 
outdated in some details) while FFmpeg supports many 
other containers among them nut which supports all 
(?) pix_fmts present in FFmpeg.
