[FFmpeg-user] How to configure x86_64

From the latest git head, I try to configure ffmpeg with —arch=x86_64, but it ends up with x86 (generic).
I’m running OS 10.9 on a Mac Pro 5,1.  It’s a 64 bit machine and a 64 bit kernel, so why is this happening?
Am I correct to assume that using 64 bit ffmpeg would mean faster encoding?
