Thanks for your thoughtful reply.  But I was hoping for something a bit simpler.

Actually, the 'Select' filter seems to do everything I wanted: multiple segments, and 
frame numbers instead of start/stop times.  I wonder why nobody mentioned this
the other times I asked.

Anyway, I think I figured out how to get the Select filter working.  However, I didn't
check the audio sync yet.
