Thank you. I actually have found this page 
https://ffmpeg.org/trac/ffmpeg/wiki/UbuntuCompilationGuide , which seems 
to give instructions specific to ubuntu users. I don't suppose switching 
is going to have much effect on my project and I will probably return 
asking the same questions. But I do intend to start using the software to 
which the list is dedicated before making further queries here.
