ffmpeg -formats lists the available (input- and output-) formats 
(avi, matroska, asf, ogg, transport stream, program stream etc.), 
ffmpeg -codecs lists the available (input- and output-) codecs 
(MPEG-1 Video, H263, native MPEG-4 ASP, realvideo x, libxvid, 
libx264 etc.), they are two independent things.
