[FFmpeg-user] FFmpeg's guidelines for cross-platform compilation?

I somewhat remember to have read some comment about that the  
FFmpeg-developers try to write the code in a way that it compiles on  
as many architectures/platforms as easily as possible.

If I'm wrong, please correct me - but if there is such a text, could  
you please point me to it, as I would need it as a reference in an  
article.
