I had the same problem, and found mplayer much easier for this task.

My code (bash):

TEST=`mplayer -msglevel identify=6 -frames 0 "$NAME" 2>&1 | grep -e

BITRATE=$(trim `echo "$TEST" | cut -d= -f2`)
