I don't know how he does it, but here is how I do:

curl -#LG -d "p=ffmpeg.git;a=snapshot;h=HEAD;sf=tgz" -o ffmpeg.tar.gz http://git.videolan.org/

I haven't been able to figure git out, 
though there's been no need to really try.
