How do one convert a 16:9 video to CIF size in 3gp container? Naturally
one would try just doing it, expecting the result with either wrong
aspect or letterbox, and tweak from there.
What I tried is:
$ ffmpeg -i Big_Buck_Bunny_Trailer_1080p.ogg -s cif \
-acodec aac -strict experimental Big_Buck_Bunny_Trailer.3gp
(The part "-acodec aac -strict experimental" is to take over AMR
codecs which weren't shipped with Ubuntu. It shouldn't be relevant
to this discussion.)

To my surprise, mplayer plays back the resulting file with both
letterbox and wrong aspect (stretched to 384x288). Even more surprising,
the letter box is on the left and right side, instead of on the top and
bottom. Converting a 16:9 movie to CIF, anyone would expect letterbox,
if exist, on the top and bottom.
Thus I am clueless now. Where would you start research from here? I
tried to force aspect and add padding anyway, with various level of
failures.
mplayer being 1.0~rc4.dfsg1+svn33713-1 while ffmpeg being 0.7.2. The
output of ffmpeg conversion and mplayer playback in-question are
attached below. With that of mplayer first for being shorter.
