Because long lines are hard to read (the eye loses the alignment on the
carriage return), even more so if they overflow the display area (and you
can not have it too large if you want it side by side with code) and either
are rewrapped randomly or need scrolling.
And because a lot of developers favour mail clients that do not tinker with
the text layout, thus making it possible to quote snippets of code with the
intended indentation and to write small ASCII-art diagrams or so.
