I read that it was "less synchronous"

Did you get them before?
I have been contemplating a patch to ffmpeg to make the directshow
input "back off" by not accepting more packets instead of just
dropping them on the floor. It's a more 'direct-show-y' approach but
haven't done it yet, nor am I indeed certain if it would be better or
not. Until then, you can either limit the fps of your input, or live
with the "frame dropped!" messages I guess.
