RESOLVED on ffmpeg-devel list. Solution:
set SDL_VIDEO_ALLOW_SCREENSAVER environment variable to 1
[ FYI, a related problem in mplayer was due to a bug that was causing it
to ignore -nostop-xscreensaver. That problem should be fixed soon. ]
