Thanks for your input.

ffmpeg -i VTS_01_1.VOB -f avi -vcodec mpeg4 -vtag DIVX -vb 1000K -s 
640x572 -acodec libmp3lame -ab 128K test7.avi

Result was bad: it started playing but the video displayed bizarre coloured 
patterns. ALSO: quits playing after about 5 secs.
