Use FreeBSD. You can run most linux programs natively and many more 
using "emulation". And it has a BSD licence- which means corporations 
use it to do their bidding as well (like Sony).

And having had your experience, I do sympathise. Linuxers can be rather 
"cantankerous" when dealing with anything not free. As you can see BSD 
has no such qualms. It is free- free to do *whatever* you want (without 
making you feel guilty either) with mostly know problems- including 
running FFmpeg, xine, mplayer, etc with whatever codecs you have installed.

Better docs too... :)
