[FFmpeg-user] Building ffmpeg and libx264 on ubuntu

I have tried that 3 times now... is it perhaps the version of x264?
I'm building the main tree
git clone git://git.videolan.org/x264
built it again from a make distclean and a clean build
after running :
sudo apt-get remove ffmpeg x264 libx264-dev

tried calling x264 incase i missed a build and there's defiantly nothing there.
