I found it funny also when I first saw it, but I forgot to ask Bobby. I 
think it comes in inspiration from mplayer filter framework (that maybe 
was inspired in gimp filters that probably was inspired in photoshop 
filters...).

Personally, it doesn't annoy me, but I know FFmpeg official instance 
about inclusion of anything useless :-)
