Well, I just followed the pattern of the existing code above.

What shall I do? Change the existing code, change only 
my new code or leave it as is and add a patch later that 
changes only this bit but for all at once?

The separate libavutil patch and the remaining patch - should they be separate
as separate patches in a single patchset or also in separate patchsets?
