Patches 1-2 out of this set should be uncontroversial and straightforward, 
so I'll go ahead and push them soon.

Patch 3 adds an option to ffprobe, to keep the test output deterministic 
despite using full absolute paths, and that feels a bit more 
controversial, so I'd like some sort of ack on that one.
