The primary motivation here is that nvidia abandoned vdpau, so to access 
more modern decoder features, which on Windows are easily available 
through DXVA2/D3D11VA, you are forced to use their API.

If AMD properly supports all those(most prominently VP9 and 10/12bit) 
via vaapi/dxva, there shouldn't be a reason for another API.
