IMHO, "supporting" pkg-config is not a choice make the application (i.e.:
ffmpeg) but by the library (i.e. x265): if a library decides to have complex
dependencies and to provide access to them through pkg-config, then
applications using that library should do so; anything else is an
unsupported hack.
