Well, I don't think it's a case of "making it work" exactly though, there are other solutions including putting part of the code in C files even if the main code is C++.
My main concern however is that with the current proposal that does not add a test we'll very soon have examples that pretend to/look like they work with C++ but are actually broken, which I personally consider a lot worse than no C++ support at all.
Also if we decide to have this "ugliness", why then only and exactly in the examples and not go all the way and do it in the headers?
I considered the stance "we only do C" reasonable (also since it matches with or expertise), even if maybe not the most user-friendly.
I'm not so convinced of a half-half approach.
