Just for clarification, though (mostly because I realized how strange
the edited-down version of the comment reads when compared to what
it's actually doing - I almost thought that might have been holding it
up until I saw the commit, which is why I'm posting this), is it more
advisable to target the most current version of the library (now
12.0.1), or mostly target the older, _WIN-name using versions?
Because while the comment says 'maintain compatibility with pre-v12
versions' it's actually defaulting to that, and the redefines are
simply making the v12+ versions compatible with the old code.

In which case, I'll send in another patch that either revises the
comment only or - if it should primarily target the new versions - one
that does actually change the names used by the wrapper and reverse
the redefine so it's the old versions that stay compatible with the
new names.
