Whenever an email comes across about libavfilter I think why would anyone use that. I guess its more of a generalized approach and
there might actually be some useful things in there.

alpha value is just about as easy and as fast as it can be via the hardware. And of course many visual effects are better done in
the hardware but maybe not an option for some.
overlays are just an extension of the app.
A while back I needed audio waveform data and just about the same time a filter was being written for libavfilter to do this. For me
I needed finer control over it and to also create peak data files so next time it would much faster so again just rolled my own.
Just my 2 cents and really I do think about it from time to time.
