Others might disagree, but I believe the maintenance burden of feature
duplication far outweighs the benefits for the user.

Assuming the input is stereo, you can do that with
"[a] [b] amerge, pan=stereo:c0<c0+c2:c1<c1+c3".
That's not very hard, and a copy-pastable example in the docs does not
suffer from maintenance problems.
