There is nothing that comes to mind. If you have anything to suggest, I can

My purpose is to be compatible with the xxd tool. It has a "reverse" mode
where it parses the hexdump and produces binary, so being compatible is
especially useful.

Not with the API as it is, and I do not like the principle of extending it,
especially as it is.
The patch still applies cleanly as is, and if no one has any objection I
would like to push it, because I believe it is useful.
