I am not sure about the -1 explanation: it looks like it means -1 is a
special value, and that the values listed here are the only acceptable ones,
which is not true.
What about this:
any large value means that the internal buffer will be
reallocated as needed up to that limit; -1 is converted to
UINT_MAX, the largest limit possible.
