What did you expect?

Time is not everything:
$ git clone git://git.ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg.git
Receiving objects: 100% (139572/139572), 28.38 MiB | 1.36 MiB/s, done.
$ wget http://ffmpeg.org/releases/ffmpeg-snapshot-git.tar.bz2
Length: 36453654 (35M) [application/x-bzip]
That's a difference of 7MB, or 25%, right there.
