No, it has to be a key that SSH can use for login instead of a password.
ssh-keygen generates such a public/private pair, just make sure to send the public part (.pub extension by default, IMO quite stupid to give the private one a name that tab completion will find first).
Windows SSH clients like putty can generate them too, but I am quite sure putty can't be used to commit with git, so overall no idea how this would work on Windows or OSX, at least for people used to use some GUI...
