I'm not sure it this is also the case for mencoder but I was under the impression that you were trying to name things that both exist in mplayer and ffmpeg consistently, if the name used in mplayer makes sense and does not conflict with anything in ffmpeg. I think quite a few people are hoping for the -speed <factor> option of mencoder (adjust the speed of the file by adjusting video fps and resampling audio, I think) to make it into ffmpeg one day.

Maybe this is not an issue if it is going to be implemented as a filter or a set of filters anyway but I thought I should just bring this up so you can make a conscious decision for or against that potential name clash, which might not be that far away.
