I just don't understand that. In particular I don't understand why
writing has anything to do with exporting.

Covert art is meant to be seen IMHO, I guess some people might wish to
see the covert art on their computer...
What I care about is ipod/iphone/itunes.

No need for that. Every format that I know of support bmp/jpeg/png.
