Thank you for mentioning openSUSE (I still hope you'd go away, but I was waiting
for somebody mentioning openSUSE)!

Every installation initially offers the user to add the packman repository
(packman.links2linux.de) to the used software sources (no additional action
necessary) exactly the same way as the Nvidia and ATI (and several special
Open-Source) repositories are added. Packman not only distributes FFmpeg, but
Manfred Tremmel (the maintainer) so far was not infected by the release-virus,
making openSUSE's FFmpeg typically being up-to-date (three weeks old as of this
writing, latm support was requested yesterday on the packman mailing list). The
repository can also be added any time later using the repositories dialog.

So, "for practical purposes", OpenSUSE does distribute FFmpeg.

(The MPlayer version is currently buggy and outdated, but I had used it for many
years since it used to be up-to-date and working nicely.)
