why do you want to fail due to a unused variable?
there should be a check for the actual packet or whatever being to
large. 
Just IMHO of course ...

If you really wanted to fail for that passing a context for av_log into
the function might be an option but then its ugly and anyway iam not
maintainer so this is all not my decission anyway not to mention i
dont care too much as long as its not exploitable.
