Thanks for the explanation; I think all of those features would be very
useful for building a/v players (I just never thought about putting them
in libavdevice ;-).

Well, I posted it to the ml, but it was... Some time ago (two or three
years, I think :). So, no surprise you missed it.
Anyway, an almost up-to-date (but still unclean - the configure part of
this patch is broken) can be found here:
