The standard attempt at a rationale would be: to indicate grouping, so
that there is not the possibility of the single grammatical unit "Sound
Blaster Pro 2". (This is not perfectly and unambiguously extensible to
indicate grouping of larger sequences of words, but that's no surprise
given that English is a naturally-developed language rather than a
devised one.)

In practice, however, it really is merely "because that's how English
works"; the above is just a guess at *why* English works that way.
