I don't hope that's default thinking. It's critical for broad adoption that
this sort of stuff "just works", of course without it affecting binary size,
runtime speed and all of the usual suspects too much on unaffected systems.

Right now, a ubuntu/ppc package built on a g4 crashes without any notice
whatsoever on a g3, that is unacceptable. There's multiple ways to fix it,
but the unacceptability of any crash should be generally acknowledged.
