Nah, ain't no real competition.
I don't care much if people prefer one solution over another.
I've even been granted an XboX to port GeeXboX too and even if it was doable
I always had recommended our users to go to XBMC for that purpose.

GeeXboX being a distribution and not a video player or a media center app,
I even considered using/adding XBMC Linux months ago but hadn't checked
for progress for quite a long time.

I just remembered from the last time I've checked that the Linux port
was relying on many win32 DLLs. That's why i've asked about the "natively"
term. I have no doubts that the UI and so on is native Linux application.
I'll give a new try to your Linux version soon however.
