No, you're not free to put words into my mouth, thank you.

I don't think FFmpeg using autoconf/automake would have made my job any
easier; rewriting the build system every time as was done before did
make it more complex, and didn't allow the same fine-grained setup as
we have now in xine-lib-1.2; I think the problem here was the first
choice to rewrite it rather than doing the right thing the first time
around: use FFmpeg's (although I suppose this might have been more
complex, I wasn't around when FFmpeg was first introduced so I'm not
sure what was used at the time).

Having FFmpeg switching to CMake (and probably coremake also counts
that way, I haven't looked it up yet to know), *that* will make my life
way harder, to the point I'd probably have to return to rewrite of the
build system to automake (just because CMake-in-automake is more than
simple chaos).

So, what do I want from FFmpeg? Hmm, I'd like they didn't skip over my
patches most of the times, but that can't be helped, can it? ;)
The build system for me is fine as it is; well it might be a bit easier
for xine if FFmpeg supported Mac OS X Universal Binary building
natively, without having to add more code to xine, but I suppose that
if I spent enough time trying to find a pleasant solution, I would have
had that already.

So the only thing I can hope for is that FFmpeg never switches to CMake
or something that messy.
