I did that for libavcodec. Now, with your patch, I remember I had 
planned to do libavformat, then libavutil, but forgot about it =)
Do you think you could do that for the remaining code?
Just use
grep -e "\(<<\|>>\)[[:blank:]]*8"
and see who else is trying to manually do those byte shifts.
